Addis Ababa – The Chairperson of the African Union’s Committee, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has warmly welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent declaration expressing his intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine.
In a statement, Chairperson Youssouf said Macron’s position aligns with the longstanding and principled stance of the African Union, which was reaffirmed during the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly held on February 15–16, 2025, in Addis Ababa. During that summit, African leaders reiterated their firm support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state.
Describing Macron’s announcement as a “significant step” toward achieving a lasting and comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Youssouf emphasized the importance of upholding international law and implementing relevant United Nations resolutions.
He reiterated the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the two-state solution, which envisions the peaceful and secure coexistence of both Israel and Palestine. Furthermore, Youssouf called on other nations to follow France’s example and take similar actions in support of the Palestinian people’s legitimate aspirations.
The African Union has long been a vocal advocate for justice and sovereignty for the Palestinian people, positioning itself as a key international voice in support of Palestinian statehood.
