ACCRA — Ghana has deployed 53 military personnel to Jamaica to aid in post-hurricane recovery, including eight officers and 45 soldiers specializing in engineering and infrastructure repair, officials said Tuesday.

President John Dramani Mahama formally saw off the contingent at a ceremony in Accra, praising their mission as a demonstration of Ghana’s commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian support.

“These officers and soldiers carry not just equipment and skills, but the goodwill of the Ghanaian people,” President Mahama said. “They will help rebuild communities, restore essential infrastructure, and bring hope to those affected by the hurricane.”

The team is expected to work closely with Jamaican authorities and local communities on critical recovery projects, including repairing roads, restoring electricity and water services, and rebuilding homes, schools, and health facilities damaged by the storm.

In addition to sending personnel, Ghana has provided humanitarian aid to Jamaica, including rice, essential medicines, and blankets to support families displaced or affected by the hurricane. Officials say the combined deployment of personnel and supplies aims to accelerate recovery and ensure affected communities regain stability as quickly as possible.

Ghana’s Defense Ministry emphasized that the engineers’ skills and specialized equipment are crucial for addressing the widespread damage caused by severe weather events. “Our team is trained for rapid disaster response and infrastructure rehabilitation,” said a senior military official who oversaw the deployment.

The mission also underscores Ghana’s growing role in international humanitarian efforts. Officials noted that in recent years, the country has sent personnel and aid to assist nations affected by natural disasters and other emergencies, highlighting Ghana’s commitment to both regional cooperation and global responsibility.

The deployed soldiers are expected to remain in Jamaica for several weeks, completing reconstruction and recovery projects in coordination with local authorities and international partners.
