GARBAHAREY – Intense fighting broke out early Saturday morning on the outskirts of Garbaharey district in Somalia’s Gedo region, after Somali National Army (SNA) troops launched a pre-dawn offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in the village of Birta Dheer.
According to government officials, the operation was carefully planned and successfully executed, resulting in the destruction of militant bases and hideouts in the area.
Government officials based in there added that the assault followed credible intelligence reports indicating that Al-Shabaab fighters had been regrouping in Birta Dheer and surrounding locations.
The military confirmed that casualties were inflicted on both sides during the clashes, though the exact number of losses remains unverified. No official figures have yet been released regarding the extent of the damage or fatalities.
Authorities emphasized that the operation is part of an ongoing military campaign aimed at flushing Al-Shabaab out of Gedo region entirely.
Nevertheless, security commanders underlined that similar offensives will continue until all militant strongholds across Gedo are dismantled and the region is fully secured.
