Mogadishu: Stability is gradually returning to the Sabiid and Caanoole areas of southern Somalia, as the Somali National Army (SNA) successfully reclaims territory from Al-Shabaab militants. The towns, located in the Middle Shabelle region, are now firmly under government control, marking a turning point in the effort to restore peace and security in the area.

“Displaced residents of Sabiid and Caanoole are returning to their homes.:
Displaced residents are beginning to return home—many for the first time in months. Although infrastructure, including the vital bridge linking Sabiid and Caanoole, was severely damaged during the conflict, families remain undeterred. Locals say the desire to rebuild and reconnect with their communities is stronger than the challenges they face.
Security has significantly improved, with Somali troops maintaining a strong and reassuring presence in both towns. Government forces are actively patrolling the area, encouraging residents to resume their lives peacefully and confidently.
“The return of civilians to Sabiid and Caanoole is a powerful sign of hope,” said General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, commander of the Somali Army’s ground forces in the region. “We are committed to maintaining security and rebuilding what was lost.”
General Sahal praised the military’s progress and confirmed that efforts to liberate all Al-Shabaab-held areas are ongoing. “The recapture of these towns is a major step forward in our campaign,” he added.
While the destruction of the bridge remains a challenge, plans are reportedly underway for reconstruction. In the meantime, residents continue to return in growing numbers, determined to restore their homes and lives.
The Somali National Army’s continued presence and commitment to long-term security signal a new chapter for Sabiid, Caanoole, and the broader Shabeelaha Hoose region—one focused on peace, recovery, and resilience.
