MOGADISHU — The deputy executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Maxamed Cabdi Waare, has stepped up diplomatic engagement with Somalia’s key international partners in a renewed push to advance peace, stability and long-term development in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa, IGAD said.
During a series of high-level meetings in Mogadishu, Ware held talks with Britain’s ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in peace and security, national reconciliation, state-building and institutional development. The two sides also reviewed ongoing efforts to support Somalia’s federalisation process, improve governance, and enhance coordination between international partners and Somali authorities.
Officials said the United Kingdom continues to play a prominent role in Horn of Africa affairs, particularly at the United Nations Security Council, where London has been actively engaged in shaping international policy on Somalia, counter-terrorism efforts, and humanitarian support.
In a separate meeting, Ware met with the European Union’s ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro. Their discussions reaffirmed the close partnership between IGAD and the EU on a range of priority issues, including peace and security, climate change adaptation, migration management, and strengthening the resilience of local communities affected by conflict and environmental shocks. The talks also touched on the EU’s continued support for stabilization programs and capacity-building initiatives aimed at empowering Somali institutions and civil society.
Ware also held discussions with Justin Davis, the chargé d’affaires at the U.S. embassy in Somalia. The meeting highlighted the importance of continued cooperation on security sector reform, counter-extremism, youth empowerment, and improving livelihoods for vulnerable communities affected by displacement and instability.
U.S. support for Somalia and IGAD’s regional stabilization agenda was described by officials as a cornerstone of broader international engagement in the Horn of Africa.
IGAD said the meetings reflect a coordinated effort to align international support with regional strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of instability, including governance challenges, economic hardship, climate stress, and insecurity. The diplomatic engagements underscore IGAD’s role as a key regional platform working alongside global partners to promote sustainable peace and development in Somalia and the wider region.
