The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has endorsed the recent agreement reached between the Federal Government of Somalia and members of the Somali Salvation Forum, describing it as a landmark step in the country’s fragile political transition.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, praised the Somali leadership for choosing dialogue and consensus over confrontation. He said the deal represents “a vital step toward unity, stability, and reconciliation” at a time when Somalia continues to grapple with political, security, and humanitarian challenges.
Dr. Gebeyehu extended special congratulations to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, applauding his commitment to guiding Somalia along “a path of peace, solidarity, and national cohesion.” He noted that the President’s decision to engage constructively with opposition leaders reflects a spirit of statesmanship and compromise that could set the tone for Somalia’s future political processes.
“The ongoing dialogues and negotiations on outstanding issues are crucial pathways to achieving lasting peace, state-building, and democratic transformation. These talks must continue,” the statement read, emphasizing IGAD’s position that Somalia’s long-term stability depends on dialogue-driven solutions rather than unilateral actions.
The agreement, reached after weeks of difficult negotiations, centers on forging consensus around Somalia’s electoral framework—an issue that has frequently triggered political disputes and gridlock. Analysts suggest the deal could help reduce polarization and open the door to a more inclusive system of governance.
Dr. Gebeyehu urged all Somali stakeholders—including federal authorities, opposition groups, and regional leaders—to build on this momentum and avoid actions that could undermine progress. He stressed that compromise remains essential for any sustainable solution in Somalia’s complex political environment.
“IGAD will continue to stand with Somalia,” he affirmed, noting that the regional bloc is working closely with Somali leaders and civil society to advance peace, stability, and socio-economic development. He added that IGAD’s support would include mediation efforts, technical assistance, and regional cooperation aimed at ensuring Somalia’s return to durable stability.
The statement has been widely viewed as a vote of confidence in Somalia’s ability to resolve its internal disputes through dialogue. It also highlights IGAD’s readiness to remain a key partner in steering the country’s transition toward lasting peace, reconciliation, and democratic governance.
