MINNEAPOLIS, (HAN) – U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has announced her support for Minnesota State Senator Omar Fatah in his bid for mayor of Minneapolis.

Mr. Fatah welcomed the high-profile endorsement from Omar, while incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey has received backing from Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar.

“I am excited to support Sen. Fatah for Minneapolis mayor,” Omar said.

Fatah expressed gratitude for Omar’s support, highlighting the city’s growing divide between wealthy communities and everyday residents.

Omar stated she trusts Fatah to lead with change and social justice.

However, Fatah’s campaign faces scrutiny over alleged misconduct after losing the endorsement of the DFL party. Fatah said the controversy has instead brought new public support.

He also dismissed claims that he backed housing legislation benefiting his wife personally, emphasizing the law’s transparency goals.

Omar described Fatah as the candidate best positioned to unite Minneapolis, citing his work on free educational programs and support for gig economy drivers, including Uber and Lyft.

The mayoral race features 15 candidates, with the main contenders being Jacob Frey, Omar Fatah, Rev. DeWayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton.
