MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The Federal Government of Somalia has received a major donation of medical supplies from the Government of India, aimed at boosting healthcare services in the country. The 10-ton consignment, consisting of assorted medicines, was officially handed over at a ceremony held at the Port of Mogadishu.

Senior officials from the Somali government and representatives of India attended the event, underscoring the growing partnership between the two nations.
Speaking at the handover, Somali officials expressed deep appreciation for India’s support, noting that the donation comes at a critical time when Somalia is grappling with severe shortages of essential medicines and healthcare resources.
“This assistance is timely and vital for the Somali people, especially at a time when access to quality healthcare remains one of the country’s biggest challenges,” a government representative said.
Somalia’s healthcare system continues to face significant strain, compounded by decades of conflict, limited infrastructure, and recurring humanitarian crises. The delivery of medical aid from India is expected to help address urgent needs in hospitals and clinics across the country.
India has a history of providing development and humanitarian support to Somalia, particularly in education, health, and capacity building. The latest donation highlights New Delhi’s ongoing commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and contributing to stability and well-being in the Horn of Africa nation.
Officials from both sides emphasized that cooperation in the health sector is part of a broader effort to enhance relations between Somalia and India, with further collaboration expected in areas such as trade, technology, and human resource development.
