TEHRAN — Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi declined to provide details about whether Russia and China are assisting Iran in the ongoing conflict, saying only that the two countries have historically supported Tehran but refusing to elaborate while fighting continues.
In an interview with NBC News, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was asked directly whether Russia and China were currently helping Iran in the war.
“Russia and China have always supported us,” Araghchi said when pressed about their role.
When the interviewer followed up by asking whether his answer should be understood as a “yes,” Araghchi declined to clarify further.
“I do not want to give more details while the war is ongoing,” he said.
The remarks come amid rising international attention on the conflict between Iran and its adversaries in the region, with Western officials closely watching whether Tehran’s strategic partners in Moscow and Beijing are providing diplomatic, economic or military assistance.
Both Russia and China maintain close political and economic ties with Iran and have frequently coordinated positions with Tehran in international forums such as the United Nations Security Council. The two countries have also opposed Western sanctions on Iran and have called for political solutions to regional conflicts.
Analysts say Araghchi’s cautious response reflects Iran’s effort to avoid revealing sensitive wartime information while also signaling that it maintains strong relationships with major global powers.
Neither Russian nor Chinese officials immediately commented on Araghchi’s remarks. However, both governments have previously urged restraint and called for de-escalation as tensions in the region continue to rise.
Iranian officials have repeatedly said the country will defend itself against what they describe as external aggression while continuing to seek diplomatic support from partners around the world.
