TEHRAN — Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei has said that Iran and the United States have reached understandings on several issues during recent diplomatic contacts, although key disagreements remain unresolved.

Speaking to Iranian media following comments by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Baghaei said the two sides had made limited progress, but continued to differ on “two to three major issues” seen as critical to any broader agreement.

He stressed that the discussions took place in a highly tense atmosphere marked by mistrust and political uncertainty, describing the context as one shaped by “40 days of conflict,” without providing further details.

“These negotiations came after 40 days of war and were conducted in an environment of distrust and suspicion,” Baghaei said. “Therefore, it is natural that there were no expectations of reaching a final agreement in a single meeting. No one expected that.”

His remarks suggest cautious diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington, while also highlighting the significant gaps that remain in their positions.

Baghaei did not specify the exact issues still under dispute, but indicated that continued dialogue would be necessary to narrow differences.

The comments come amid renewed international attention on Iran–U.S. relations, which have long been shaped by tensions over security, regional influence, and nuclear-related concerns. Despite occasional diplomatic openings, both sides have struggled to sustain long-term agreements.

Observers say the latest statements reflect both sides’ attempt to manage expectations, signaling limited progress while acknowledging that a breakthrough remains distant.
