WASHINGTON, (HAN)- Jeffrey Smith, a prominent U.S.-based human rights advocate and founder of Vanguard Africa, has issued a strong call to action for democratic leaders across the world to stand in solidarity with the people of Cameroon as they continue to struggle against what he described as “tyranny.”

In a recent post shared on his social media platform, Smith emphasized the urgent need for the international community—especially democratic governments—to take a firm stance in support of the Cameroonian people’s demand for justice, freedom, and accountable governance.

“It is time for global democratic leaders to stand with the people of #Cameroon who have taken a stand against tyranny,” Smith wrote. “Washington, in particular — which has already reduced security assistance to President Paul Biya’s regime over human rights concerns — must make its voice heard.”

Smith’s remarks come amid growing discontent in Cameroon, where President Paul Biya, who has ruled the country since 1982, continues to face accusations of authoritarianism, widespread corruption, and severe human rights violations. Over the years, government forces have been accused of targeting opposition supporters, suppressing peaceful protests, and committing abuses in the country’s conflict-affected Anglophone regions.

Vanguard Africa, the organization founded by Smith, has been instrumental in promoting democratic governance and supporting pro-democracy movements across the African continent. Through advocacy and partnerships, the group has worked to amplify the voices of African citizens demanding transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.

Smith’s appeal highlights the growing international concern over Cameroon’s deteriorating political and human rights situation. He urged not only Washington but also other democratic nations and international bodies to go beyond statements of concern and take meaningful steps to pressure the Biya government toward reform, dialogue, and respect for fundamental freedoms.
