Nairobi – Kenya’s Interior Minister has accused protesters of attempting a coup following deadly demonstrations that rocked the capital, Nairobi, and several other cities. The protests, which turned violent on Thursday, led to the destruction of property, loss of lives, and widespread disruption of business activities.
In central Nairobi, several buildings were set ablaze as tensions escalated between demonstrators and security forces. Among those affected is Ibrahim Hamisi, the owner of one of the burnt buildings.
“I have lost everything I worked for over the years,” said Hamisi, as he stood in front of the charred remains of his property. “We support peaceful protests, but this destruction has left many of us with no way to rebuild.”
Authorities report that at least 29 people were killed and dozens injured during the clashes. The Interior Minister vowed that the government would take firm action against what he described as “an organized attempt to destabilize the country’s constitutional order.”
The protests were initially intended to briefly address the problems that had arisen last year over rising living costs, tax increases, and disputed election results, but they quickly turned into chaos.
Security forces have been deployed across key areas of the city to restore order, and investigations are underway to identify those responsible for inciting violence.
