Nairobi: Kenya – Police in Nairobi have sealed off major roads leading into the city centre on Wednesday morning as citizens take to the streets to mark the one-year anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-government protests.
The heavy police presence and roadblocks come amid fears of renewed unrest, exactly a year after demonstrators stormed parliament, an event that ended in tragedy when security forces opened fire, leaving several people dead.
Public transport has been severely disrupted. Commuters using public service vehicles (PSVs) were forced to disembark outside the central business district (CBD) and proceed on foot due to the road closures.
Officers have erected razor-wire barricades on key entry points, effectively cutting off access to the city centre and raising tensions among residents already bracing for possible clashes.
Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, but the heightened security underscores the government’s concerns over potential unrest on this symbolic day.
