Mandera, March 14, 2025 – One Kenyan police officer was killed and another injured following a violent confrontation with Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) forces along the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera County.
According to a police report seen by The Standard, the clash occurred on March 14 when a group of Somali NISA officers reportedly attacked five Kenyan officers who were manning the border.
“One of the officers was fatally shot in the stomach and another was injured in the upper left arm during the attack from Somalia’s NISA forces,” the report stated.
In the aftermath of the incident, firearms belonging to the slain officer and a National Police Reservist were reported missing. The weapons are suspected to be in the possession of the Somali forces.
“The Somali NISA officers also robbed one G3 rifle with 60 rounds and an AK-47 with 30 rounds of ammunition,” the report added.
The injured officer was quickly transported to Mandera Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.
Security sources suggest that the attack may have been a retaliatory act. It is believed to be linked to the earlier arrest of terror suspects who had allegedly plotted to kidnap Chinese workers in Mandera.
“The attack was coordinated by a brother of one of the suspects who is a NISA officer, according to information from Somali authorities,” said the police.
Kenyan authorities are reportedly investigating the incident and have raised concerns over cross-border security breaches and rising tensions between the two nations’ security forces.
