MOGADISHU – A massive rally in support of one-person, one-vote elections shook Mogadishu on Saturday night, particularly at the Taleex junction, where thousands of residents from across Banaadir region gathered.

Protesters carried placards with slogans endorsing the new electoral system, expressing strong backing for the democratic process being introduced in the region.

Some participants told reporters they were pleased that voter registration had finally been completed and voiced hope for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Deputy Governor of Banaadir for Security and Politics, Mohamed Ahmed Diriye (Yabooh), addressing the rally, declared the region fully prepared for the polls.

“Banaadir is ready for the elections. Citizens have been properly registered, and we are looking forward to a peaceful vote,” Yabooh said.

The electoral commission confirmed that voter registration in Banaadir has concluded, with nearly one million people enrolled.

The local council elections in Banaadir are scheduled for October, marking a significant step towards implementing the one-person, one-vote system in Somalia.
