Mogadishu – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungaab), today paid an inspection visit to Somalia’s largest marketplace, Bakara Market, in response to growing complaints from traders about ongoing land grabbing in parts of the market by certain individuals.

After listening to the grievances of the business community, the Governor announced a firm decision conveyed from the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. He stated that no one has the authority to evict traders and no directive has been issued by the Banadir regional administration or national leadership regarding the Bakara Market land, which is officially owned by the Mogadishu Municipality.

“I have responded to your distress call, and I was sent here by the President, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,” said Mayor Mungaab. “There is no one who legally owns this land, and no one has the power to displace you. You should continue your work in peace. If anyone comes to harass you, we will handle them ourselves. To those who have greedy ambitions over this land, I say: May God instill faith in your hearts.”

The Mayor emphasized his responsibility to protect citizens and their property, firmly stating that no one will be allowed to violate the rights of traders in any of Mogadishu’s markets, including Bakara Market, Suuq Bacaad, and Xamarweyne Market. He also issued a strong warning to individuals who have forged fake documents in an attempt to claim government-owned land.

Mayor Mungaab’s visit was accompanied by Deputy Governor for Security and Politics, Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Diriye; Director of the Markets Department, Mr. Nur Hussein Hassan; and the District Commissioner of Hawlwadaag, Mr. Bashir Abdi Mohamed.
