Mogadishu – The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), announced today a donation of $200,000 to support emergency drought relief efforts in Awdal, a region in Somaliland.
This announcement came during a meeting with federal ministers and Members of Parliament elected from Awdal. During the session, the officials briefed the Governor on the worsening drought conditions in the region and the growing appeals for help from Awdal’s elders and political leaders.
Dr. Muungaab responded by declaring that the Banadir Regional Administration would contribute $200,000 towards immediate humanitarian assistance for the affected communities.
He said that both his administration and the people of Banadir stand in solidarity with their fellow Somalis in Awdal. He noted that the funds would be handed over to the National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) to ensure the aid reaches those in need efficiently and helps prevent further loss of life due to the worsening humanitarian crisis.
The move underscores the importance of national unity and shared responsibility in responding to natural disasters that affect vulnerable Somali communities.
However, this financial aid provided by the Banadir Administration came at a time that Awdal region in Somalia is currently facing a severe drought, with the Somali Federal Government and international organizations responding to the humanitarian crisis. The drought is significantly impacting communities in Saylac and Lughaya districts, and surrounding villages, leading to displacement and a lack of resources.
