MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has met Russia’s ambassador to Somalia, Mikhail Golovanov, as part of a series of high-level consultations with foreign diplomats aimed at strengthening Mogadishu’s international partnerships.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Barre briefed the Russian envoy on the country’s latest political and security developments, including progress in state-building efforts, institutional reforms and the expansion of essential government services.

The meeting also covered Somalia’s growing role in regional and international affairs, with both sides discussing opportunities to broaden cooperation between Mogadishu and Moscow. The talks come as Somalia continues to diversify its diplomatic relationships while seeking greater support for security operations and development initiatives.

Prime Minister Barre updated Ambassador Golovanov on the humanitarian situation, highlighting the severe impact of ongoing drought across several regions. He underscored the government’s efforts to mobilise relief assistance and strengthen resilience among affected communities.

Ambassador Golovanov welcomed the positive trajectory of Somalia–Russia relations and reiterated Moscow’s commitment to deepening cooperation, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as security, humanitarian support and economic development.

Also present at the meeting was the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, who delivered a detailed statistical briefing on the drought’s impact and the government’s response strategy. Senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office also attended.

The discussions are part of a broader diplomatic push by the Somali government as it seeks stronger international partnerships to support its political, security and humanitarian priorities.
