Nairobi – Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has firmly stated that Kenya’s next general election will be held as scheduled in 2027, dismissing any calls or attempts to derail the constitutional timeline.

Speaking at the 103rd International Co-operative Day celebrations held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Saturday, Mudavadi underscored the importance of upholding the 2010 Constitution, describing it as the ultimate guide for governance and democratic processes in the country.

“There is no alternative system that surpasses the one enshrined in our Constitution,” Mudavadi declared. “If you are dissatisfied with our leadership, remember that the only legitimate way to enact change is through the ballot.”

His remarks come amid ongoing political debates over electoral reforms and the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which Mudavadi said is crucial in preparing the ground for a credible 2027 poll.

He warned against any efforts that could undermine Kenya’s democratic institutions, cautioning that unconstitutional actions risk plunging the country into uncertainty.

“In the face of an unconstitutional regime, such as a military dictatorship, the timing of the next election is uncertain,” he said, emphasizing the dangers of veering off the democratic path.

Mudavadi’s comments appear aimed at political factions suggesting alternative systems of governance or election timelines. He urged Kenyans to defend the Constitution, which was overwhelmingly passed in a 2010 referendum with 70 percent support.

“The Constitution is our covenant. It must be respected by all, regardless of political affiliation,” he concluded.
