WINDHOEK, (HAN) — The Namibian government has renamed Feld Street in Ausspannplatz, Windhoek, in honor of Sir Seretse Khama, the founding president of Botswana.

The renaming recognizes Botswana’s significant contribution to Namibia’s liberation struggle and celebrates the historical ties between the two neighboring nations.

Officials said the move is part of Namibia’s efforts to honor African leaders and nations that supported the country’s independence before 1990.

“Sir Seretse Khama was a visionary leader who championed peace, unity, and regional cooperation,” Namibia’s Minister of Urban and Rural Development said during the renaming ceremony. “His solidarity with the Namibian people during their struggle for freedom will never be forgotten.”

During Namibia’s liberation war, Botswana hosted thousands of Namibian refugees and provided crucial political and humanitarian support to SWAPO and other liberation movements.

Botswana’s ambassador to Namibia welcomed the gesture, describing it as a “symbol of friendship, shared history, and enduring partnership between our two nations.”

The newly renamed Sir Seretse Khama Street now joins other major streets in Windhoek named after African leaders and nations that played key roles in Namibia’s journey to independence.
