NEW DELHI: Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, held an official meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, underscoring renewed diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
The talks focused on strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, with discussions covering security cooperation, education, trade, capacity-building, and social development initiatives. Both sides highlighted the historical ties between India and Somalia and expressed interest in deepening practical collaboration in key sectors that contribute to stability and development.
Minister Abdisalam thanked the Indian government for its continued support to Somalia, particularly in areas such as professional training, educational scholarships for Somali students, and development assistance programs. He noted that India’s contributions have played an important role in building Somali institutional capacity and human capital.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace, stability, and development. He emphasized the importance India places on Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and reiterated New Delhi’s readiness to expand cooperation with the Federal Government of Somalia.
Diplomatic observers note that the meeting sends a clear signal regarding India’s official engagement with Somalia’s internationally recognized federal authorities, reinforcing the broader international position of respecting Somalia’s unity and state institutions.
Both parties agreed to accelerate future cooperation through diplomatic channels, encourage economic partnerships, and explore new areas of collaboration that could benefit both nations. The meeting is expected to pave the way for increased exchanges at governmental and technical levels between Mogadishu and New Delhi.
