LASANOD – Authorities have officially announced the formation of the new Northeastern Somalia regional parliament, consisting of 83 members drawn from the three regions under the administration.

According to the allocation:
• 37 members represent the Sanaag region,
• 30 members represent the Sool region,
• 16 members represent the Togdheer region.

Despite lingering clan-based grievances and disputes, preparations are now moving toward the next phase — the election of the parliamentary leadership and regional president, expected in the coming days.

Notably, the new parliament includes four women, three of whom are from Sanaag.

The swearing-in ceremony for the lawmakers is set to take place today in Lasanod, after which the election of the parliamentary speaker will follow immediately. Several candidates have already declared their interest in the post, and political campaigning is anticipated to intensify in the coming hours and days.

The process of forming the administration has faced significant hurdles, including repeated disputes and power struggles among local clans. However, after lengthy negotiations, stakeholders have finally reached consensus, paving the way for the establishment of the new governing institutions.
