ISLAMABAD — Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday welcomed a reported ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, describing it as a “wise and timely step” toward reducing escalating tensions across the region.
In a statement, Sharif said the truce — which also extends to flashpoints including Lebanon — had taken effect immediately, marking a significant breakthrough after days of heightened confrontation.
“I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire,” Sharif said, adding that the development reflects “a high level of understanding and responsibility” from both sides.
The Pakistani leader extended what he described as “deep appreciation” to the leadership in both Washington and Tehran for choosing diplomacy over further escalation, stressing that the move could help prevent a wider regional conflict.
Sharif also invited official delegations from both countries to attend talks in Islamabad on Friday, April 10, 2026, in what he called an effort to build on the ceasefire and work toward a comprehensive and lasting agreement.
“We warmly welcome this positive step and invite both parties to Islamabad to continue dialogue and reach a final settlement addressing all outstanding issues,” he said.
Diplomatic sources say the proposed “Islamabad Talks” could focus on key unresolved issues, including security guarantees, regional de-escalation, economic measures, and the reopening of strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts view Pakistan’s mediation effort as part of broader regional attempts to stabilize the situation, with Islamabad positioning itself as a neutral venue for dialogue amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Sharif expressed optimism that the upcoming discussions would lead to “durable peace and long-term stability,” adding that further positive developments could be expected in the coming days if negotiations proceed constructively.
The announcement comes as international attention remains focused on whether the ceasefire can hold and evolve into a broader political settlement, with many observers cautiously hopeful but mindful of the challenges ahead.
