WARSAW — Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday warned that Europe risks losing international credibility if it remains weak and divided, calling on European nations to unite and significantly strengthen their defense and security capabilities amid mounting geopolitical threats.

Speaking during a public address in Warsaw, Tusk said Europe’s standing on the global stage — both with allies and adversaries — depends on its ability to act collectively and decisively in matters of security and defense.

“As long as Europe appears weak and fragmented, no one will respect it — neither enemies nor friends,” Tusk said. “The reality is now clear: we must unite and continue strengthening our military capabilities and our ability to defend ourselves. Otherwise, Europe’s fate and standing in the world are at serious risk.”

Tusk’s remarks come as European leaders face growing pressure to increase defense spending and military readiness, driven largely by Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and broader concerns over regional stability. The conflict has reshaped Europe’s security calculations and prompted renewed debates about collective defense and strategic autonomy.

His comments also reflect lingering uncertainty over the future of long-term U.S. security commitments to Europe, particularly as Washington reassesses its global priorities. Several European governments have in recent years pledged to boost defense budgets and expand military cooperation, though progress has varied across the bloc.

Tusk emphasized that unity, deterrence, and self-defense are no longer optional for Europe but essential for safeguarding peace, sovereignty, and its influence in an increasingly volatile international environment.
