MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Jubbaland President Ahmed Madoobe have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement aimed at resolving longstanding political disputes between the two parties.
According to sources close to the negotiations, the agreement outlines that the federal government will formally recognize Ahmed Madoobe as the legitimate President of Jubbaland. In return, Madoobe has agreed to allow the holding of one-person, one-vote local council elections in Jubbaland, with the process expected to start in select regions.
The terms of the deal include several points of compromise, allowing both sides to claim a measure of political success after prolonged discussions. Observers note that the agreement comes after months of negotiations, during which both sides sought a mutually acceptable solution.
Notably, Madoobe did not make the resignation of Prime Minister Hamza a condition for the agreement, despite the known political rivalry and previous tensions between the two leaders. Analysts suggest this signals a pragmatic approach by both parties to advance the political process in Jubbaland without escalating conflict.
The preliminary agreement is seen as a significant step towards stabilizing Jubbaland and fostering cooperation between regional authorities and the federal government. Implementation of the outlined provisions, including the upcoming local council elections, will be closely monitored by political analysts and international partners.
