MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday night formally closed the 27th meeting of the Finance Ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states, marking the first time the high-level conference has been hosted in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

In his closing remarks, President Hassan praised the finance ministers and senior officials from IGAD member states for their efforts to strengthen economic cooperation, share expertise, and promote financial stability across the Horn of Africa region.

The president highlighted that Somalia’s hosting of the summit demonstrates the country’s ongoing recovery and the growing international confidence in its institutions. He emphasized that Somalia currently holds the chairmanship of the IGAD Finance Ministers’ Forum, describing it as a strategic opportunity to enhance regional collaboration and advance the shared interests of member states.

President Hassan also noted that the forum provides a platform to coordinate policies, exchange best practices, and address common economic challenges, reinforcing the region’s collective development and stability.

The week-long meeting brought together ministers and senior finance officials from IGAD’s eight member countries, including Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, and Eritrea, with discussions focused on regional economic integration, investment promotion, and sustainable fiscal policies.

The successful hosting of the summit in Mogadishu marks a milestone for Somalia, signaling its return as an active player in regional economic governance after years of conflict and instability.
