MOGADISHU – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has paid tribute to Somali teachers on the occasion of Somali Teachers’ Day, sending warm congratulations while acknowledging the difficult conditions under which many of them work.

Speaking in a message released on Tuesday, President Hassan Sheikh said that Somali teachers carry an enormous responsibility in shaping the country’s future despite facing economic hardships, insecurity, and limited resources. He stressed that teachers deserve recognition and support for their essential role in society.

The president said the Federal Government of Somalia remains committed to strengthening the country’s education system and improving the welfare of teachers. He noted that the government has already hired thousands of teachers who now teach Somali students free of charge, with plans to expand these efforts in the coming years.

President Hassan Sheikh emphasized that teachers are at the heart of combating ignorance and building a brighter future for Somalia. Undermining or weakening the education system, he said, is one of the quickest ways to destroy a society.

“When someone wants to bring down a nation, they target the teachers or the education system,” the president stated. “It is the teacher who fights ignorance and lays the foundation for a promising future.”

In his address, President Hassan Sheikh described Somali Teachers’ Day as a moment of collective pride and appreciation. He thanked educators for their dedication, comparing the significance of their work to that of the country’s security forces.

“This is a day of joy for all of us,” he said. “I want to tell Somali teachers that the work you are doing is noble and honorable. Somali soldiers and Somali teachers both carry heavy national duties. One day, you will be fully rewarded. Today, Somali boys and girls attend school without paying fees—this is because of your efforts.”

The president concluded by calling on communities, parents, and institutions to support teachers and ensure they receive the respect, protection, and resources they deserve.
