Mogadishu — Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has urged members of the Somali diaspora in the United Kingdom to organize peaceful demonstrations opposing ongoing efforts to divide Somalia, particularly campaigns advocating for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
This call comes amid intensified lobbying by some British Members of Parliament who are pressing the UK government to formally recognize Somaliland’s unilateral declaration of independence.
Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region in northern Somalia, announced its independence in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. However, more than three decades later, it remains unrecognized by any sovereign state.
In recent months, the Somaliland administration has escalated its diplomatic outreach, leveraging Western media platforms and engaging with influential figures in an effort to garner support for its statehood ambitions.
The Federal Government of Somalia continues to firmly reject any move toward secession, stressing that the country’s unity and territorial integrity are non-negotiable. Prime Minister Hamsa’s appeal serves as a direct call to action for Somalis in the UK to counter foreign-backed initiatives that, he warns, threaten the cohesion, sovereignty, and long-term stability of the Somali nation.
