MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East following military actions by Israel and the United States against Iran, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.

During the call, Putin expressed deep concern about the rising tensions in the region and reiterated Moscow’s position opposing the use of military force to resolve disputes involving Iran or other conflicts across the Middle East.

The Kremlin said Putin emphasized that disputes in the region should be addressed through diplomatic channels and dialogue rather than armed confrontation. He warned that continued escalation could destabilize the wider Middle East and threaten international security.

“Russia firmly opposes the use of force in resolving issues related to Iran and the broader tensions in the Middle East,” the statement said, noting that Moscow believes political and diplomatic solutions remain the only viable path to long-term stability.

Iranian President Pezeshkian, who took office earlier this year, reportedly criticized Israel and the United States for what he described as aggressive actions that risk further inflaming regional tensions. According to Iranian officials, Pezeshkian told Putin that Iran reserves the right to defend its sovereignty and national security against external threats.

The two leaders also discussed strengthening diplomatic coordination between their countries and exploring ways to prevent further escalation in the region. Both sides underscored the importance of international cooperation aimed at maintaining regional stability and preventing broader conflict.

Russia and Iran have maintained close relations in recent years, particularly in areas such as security cooperation, regional politics, and energy. Moscow has frequently called for dialogue between regional powers and has opposed military interventions that could widen existing conflicts in the Middle East.

The latest developments come amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, which have been rivals for decades. The two countries have accused each other of carrying out hostile actions across the region, including attacks on military installations, cyber operations, and support for rival armed groups.

The United States, a key ally of Israel, has also been closely involved in regional security dynamics, raising concerns among international observers that the confrontation could escalate into a broader conflict involving multiple regional and global powers.

Analysts say the phone call between Putin and Pezeshkian reflects Moscow’s continued effort to position itself as a diplomatic actor in Middle Eastern affairs while maintaining strategic partnerships in the region.

Observers warn that without diplomatic engagement and restraint from all sides, the current tensions could deepen instability across the Middle East, a region already affected by multiple ongoing conflicts.
