GARISSA, (HAN) – Several people were injured on Monday evening after a passenger bus was involved in an accident near Mwingi town along the Thika–Garissa highway.

According to reports, the bus, which was carrying a full load of passengers, lost control and veered off the road before overturning beside the highway.

Residents who witnessed the crash rushed to the scene, rescuing those trapped in the wreckage and transporting them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The bus is reported to have departed Nairobi on Monday, September 29, at around 3:00 p.m., and had been on the road for about three hours before the accident occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m.

Widely circulated videos and images from the scene showed passengers being pulled out of the bus through windows, while others received first aid. The footage also revealed extensive damage to the vehicle, including a shattered windscreen, mangled seats, and broken windows.

Police have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident, with preliminary findings pointing to either speeding or slippery road conditions.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of fatal road accidents reported in Kenya over the past week. On Sunday, September 28, sixteen people died in a separate crash near Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway. The collision involved a 14-seater passenger vehicle and an oncoming truck.

Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru confirmed that 13 victims died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that Kenya recorded 3,397 road accident deaths in the first nine months of 2025—28 more than during the same period in 2024. Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities, followed by cyclists and passengers.
