Garowe: Six young Moroccan men who had faced serious accusations in Puntland, Somalia, are now on the path to freedom and reunion with their families, after being fully acquitted of terrorism charges.
The men, who traveled to Somalia in search of economic opportunity, were cleared by a military court after it was proven that they were victims of deception by individuals linked to extremist groups.
Their acquittal — finalized over 18 months ago — marks a victory for justice. The Puntland court not only overturned their initial sentences but also issued a deportation order, enabling their return to Morocco.
The young men, who voluntarily surrendered to the authorities upon realizing they had been misled into entering a dangerous area, now look forward to rebuilding their lives.
In a voice message shared by Al3omk newspaper, one of the detainees expressed optimism that the long ordeal will soon end, as their families and officials continue to work toward their safe return. Puntland authorities have reiterated their readiness to release the men and are awaiting final coordination with Moroccan authorities to complete the repatriation process.
The detainees’ families have already appealed to Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and hopes are high that the diplomatic steps needed to bring the men home will soon be achieved.
Their case stands as a reminder that even in the face of hardship, truth and justice can prevail — and that cooperation between nations can help restore lives.
