Rome – Somalia’s Ambassador to Italy, Ibrahim Omar Shegow, has confirmed the loss of lives after two boats carrying Somali migrants capsized off the coast of Lampedusa Island, a key entry point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

According to Ambassador Shegow, the boats—packed with migrants fleeing hardships and heading towards Italy—suffered technical failures before overturning in the Mediterranean waters. At least 23 people have been confirmed dead, while 15 others were rescued alive. Dozens remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.

Speaking to Somali National Media, Ambassador Shegow expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and urged Somali parents to discourage their children from undertaking the dangerous sea crossings, known locally as tahriib.

“We continue to see young Somalis perish in the seas. Our youth must avoid risking their lives. Instead, they should have faith in their homeland and use the money spent on illegal migration to build businesses and create job opportunities,” Ambassador Shegow said.

He also further called on Italian authorities and international security agencies to crack down on human trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable Somali youth, urging accountability for those profiting from the perilous journeys.

The tragedy highlights once again the dangers faced by Somali migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in search of safety and better opportunities in Europe.
