ALGIERS, (HAN) — Somalia’s Ambassador to Algeria, Yusuf Ahmed Hassan (popularly known as Yusuf Jeego), met on Wednesday with the President of the Algerian Senate, Mr. Aziz Nasri, in Algiers to explore new avenues for strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of Algeria’s upper house of parliament, focused on consolidating long-standing diplomatic, political, and parliamentary cooperation. Both officials emphasized the importance of creating institutional frameworks that would allow Somalia and Algeria to expand their partnership in practical and sustainable ways.
In a joint statement released after the talks, the two sides announced plans to establish a Somali-Algerian Parliamentary Friendship Committee. The committee will serve as a platform for exchanging legislative expertise, sharing experiences in governance, and building the capacities of both parliamentary institutions.
Ambassador Hassan welcomed the initiative and praised Algeria for its historic role in supporting Somalia through periods of difficulty. He noted that relations between the two nations are gaining momentum, with growing collaboration in education, trade, diplomacy, and security.
“This meeting marks an important step in enhancing ties between our two nations,” Ambassador Hassan said, stressing that Somalia looks forward to deepening cooperation in multiple fields.
For his part, Senate President Nasri reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s development and stability. He underscored the importance of people-to-people ties and institutional partnerships as the foundation for lasting cooperation.
The two countries have enjoyed a steadily expanding relationship in recent years, with both governments describing their ties as “strong and progressing positively.” Analysts say the creation of the joint parliamentary committee is expected to accelerate this trend and open up new opportunities for collaboration at both governmental and grassroots levels.
