A prominent Somali political analyst has expressed serious concerns regarding recent decisions made by Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, warning that they could have implications for Somali sovereignty and regional security.

Prof. Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdisamad, executive director of the Institute for Horn of Africa Strategic Studies based in Nairobi, highlighted several controversial actions allegedly taken by President Deni. According to Prof. Abdisamad, Puntland has allowed the Sudanese rebel group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to operate flights using Somali territory—a move he describes as “potentially compromising national security.”

The analyst also pointed to reports suggesting that Israeli radar equipment has been installed in Puntland, purportedly to monitor activities in neighboring Yemen. While the installation of foreign military technology on Somali soil has raised alarm among experts, there has been no official explanation from Puntland authorities.

In addition, Prof. Abdisamad claimed that President Deni authorized the landing of an aircraft that had previously been denied permission by Somalia’s Federal Government, further straining relations between Puntland and Mogadishu.

Attempts to reach both Puntland officials and representatives of the Federal Government for comment have so far been unsuccessful.

These allegations, if confirmed, could deepen tensions in Somalia’s semi-autonomous regions and raise questions about the federal government’s control over foreign activities within its borders.
