MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Somali government forces, with the backing of international partners, have intensified military operations in southern Somalia, successfully reclaiming several strategic towns and launching coordinated offensives against armed groups.
Officials say these operations mark a significant step toward stabilizing regions long affected by militant activity.
Over the past 24 hours, the Somali National Army (SNA) regained control of Awdheegle, Raqayle, Shaangarre, and Malabo, towns located in the Lower Shabelle region—an area that has historically been a stronghold for insurgent groups. These towns are strategically important, providing access routes and supply lines that have been under militant control for years.
The Ministry of Information described the recapture as a “major milestone” in the government’s broader security campaign. “These areas were successfully brought back under state authority,” the ministry said in a statement. “Our forces continue to make progress on all fronts, and we are committed to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.”
Military officials said the recent operations combined ground assaults, air support, and intelligence-driven raids, highlighting improved coordination between Somali forces and international partners. The offensives have reportedly disrupted militant networks, seizing weapons caches and dismantling insurgent bases in the recaptured towns.
Local residents have expressed cautious optimism, with many returning to their homes after months of displacement due to clashes and insecurity. Authorities have also promised to deploy government services and humanitarian assistance to stabilize the recaptured areas.
Security analysts note that while these gains are significant, challenges remain. Armed groups continue to operate in parts of southern Somalia, and sustaining control will require ongoing military vigilance, governance efforts, and community engagement.
The Somali government has reiterated its commitment to restoring security across the country, particularly in southern regions where militant activity has historically undermined state authority. Officials say further operations are planned in surrounding areas to extend government control and prevent insurgent regrouping.
