EDMONTON — Members of the Somali community in Edmonton, Canada, have publicly rejected any attempt to divide Somalia, reaffirming their support for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity.

In a statement issued this week, the Somali Edmonton Community said it stands firmly behind the unity and independence of the Federal Republic of Somalia, urging both the federal government and regional administrations to strengthen cooperation and set aside political differences that could undermine national cohesion.

The community called on Somali leaders to prioritize the collective national interest and work toward a shared future rooted in unity and mutual understanding. It stressed the importance of upholding internationally recognized borders in line with the United Nations Charter and established principles of international law.

“We emphasize the need to protect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to respect international norms that safeguard the borders of independent states,” the statement said.

The Somali community in Edmonton also appealed to Somalis both inside the country and across the diaspora to avoid rhetoric or actions that could fuel division. Instead, it urged unity, solidarity and support for Somalia’s institutions during what it described as a critical period for the nation.

The statement was signed by Osman Mohamud M. Shireh, chairman of the Somali Edmonton Community, and dated in Edmonton, Alberta. The community said it would continue to advocate for peace, unity and stability in Somalia through civic engagement and dialogue.

Somalia has faced renewed political tensions in recent months amid debates over governance, elections and regional relations, prompting diaspora communities worldwide to voice concerns about preserving the country’s unity and sovereignty.
