MOGADISHU — Former Somali presidents Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo are holding an unexpected closed-door meeting in the capital, sources have confirmed.

The talks are taking place at the residence of Sheikh Sharif, where Farmaajo arrived earlier on Tuesday for what officials described as high-level political discussions. According to sources familiar with the meeting, the request for the talks came from former President Farmaajo. No details have been released about the agenda, and both sides have remained tight-lipped.

The meeting follows Farmaajo’s visit to Kismayo, where he received a surprise invitation to attend an event despite not being part of the Samatabixinta (Rescue Forum) or the Council of the Future — two prominent political blocs currently influencing national debates. His invitation prompted speculation about shifting alliances and renewed political manoeuvring.

Although both men remain influential figures, analysts say the likelihood of either returning to the presidency is uncertain. Nevertheless, their meeting has generated significant public interest at a time when Somalia faces heightened political tensions, security challenges, and ongoing disputes over constitutional reform.

Neither Farmaajo nor Sheikh Sharif has issued any public comment regarding the meeting or its outcomes.
