WASHINGTON, (HAN) — Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Bihi Iman Ige, participated in high-level discussions at the annual International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Washington, focusing on Africa’s economic resilience and climate challenges.
Minister Bihi addressed a plenary session chaired by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, highlighting the severe economic impact of climate change on African countries, particularly in the Horn of Africa. He urged collective action and increased international support to mitigate climate risks.
On the sidelines, Minister Bihi held bilateral talks with the United Kingdom delegation, discussing investment cooperation, climate resilience strategies, and recovery efforts for climate-affected economies. Both sides expressed commitment to strengthening economic ties and exploring joint development initiatives in Somalia.
In another engagement, Minister Bihi met with Fahad Al-Turki, Director General of the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF), to discuss Somalia’s economic reform agenda, financing mechanisms, and long-term development plans. The AMF has supported Somalia’s fiscal and institutional reforms, aiding its gradual reintegration into the global financial system.
The minister’s participation highlights Somalia’s efforts to engage international partners, attract investment, and advance economic reforms despite climate and post-conflict challenges.
The current Somali government appears to be making steady progress in strengthening the nation’s economy, signaling a hopeful path toward restoring Somalia’s place in the global economy and improving the livelihoods of its citizens.
