Mogadishu — Somali National Army (SNA) troops, in coordination with allied local militias, have launched a major security operation targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, military sources confirmed on Saturday.
The offensive is concentrated in areas between Ceel Hareeri in Hiiraan and Aadan Yabaal in Middle Shabelle, with a particular focus on the Mabaax area, where insurgent activity remains a threat.
Government forces have recently retaken small settlements near Aadan Yabaal district and are working to consolidate their control as part of efforts to restore state authority and stability in the region. Parallel operations are underway in Middle and Lower Shabelle, where security forces have successfully reclaimed key locations, including Sabiid and Caanoole — both long-held strongholds of the militant group.
“These coordinated efforts reflect the determination of Somali forces to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s networks and enhance security across the country,” a military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked group designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, continues to stage deadly attacks despite sustained military pressure aimed at neutralizing its capabilities
