MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Somali Police units will be deployed to stabilize territories recently recaptured from the militant group Al-Shabaab, officials announced.

General Asad Osman Abdullahi, Commander of the Somali Police Force, met this week in Mogadishu with European Union (EU) Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro.

Their talks centered on strengthening cooperation between Somali security agencies and the EU, and on accelerating reforms within the Darwish Police units.

The Darwish, a special branch of the Somali Police, are being readied for peacekeeping and stabilization operations in newly liberated areas.

Their responsibilities will include maintaining law and order, supporting local governance, and protecting civilians.

General Asad thanked the EU for its continued support to Somalia’s security sector. The bloc has been a key partner in training, equipping, and financing Somali forces, particularly in counter-terrorism and community policing.

Officials say the deployment marks a critical step in consolidating military gains against Al-Shabaab, preventing the militants from regrouping, and laying the groundwork for long-term governance in recovered areas.
