MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has pledged close to one million dollars in humanitarian aid to assist communities affected by severe drought in the Awdal region.

According to officials, the donation amounts to $700,000 and will be handed over to a special drought relief committee tasked with coordinating emergency response efforts in the area.

Authorities underlined that the aid is strictly humanitarian and urged Somaliland authorities not to politicize the relief efforts.

The Awdal region, located in northwestern Somalia, has been grappling with prolonged drought in recent months. The crisis has devastated local livelihoods, with widespread loss of livestock and growing food insecurity among vulnerable households. Communities have repeatedly appealed for urgent assistance, prompting calls for both national and international intervention.

“The government is committed to standing with our people in Awdal during this difficult time. This aid is intended to alleviate the suffering caused by the drought, and we call on all stakeholders to ensure it reaches the most vulnerable families,” a government spokesperson said.

However, the drought in Awdal has sparked nationwide concern, with Somali communities at home and in the diaspora joining relief efforts. Humanitarian groups warn that without immediate and sustained assistance, the situation could escalate into a larger crisis affecting thousands of families.

The government said the funds will soon be disbursed and delivered to the targeted communities in Awdal, as part of broader efforts to respond to the worsening humanitarian challenges across the country.
