MOGADISHU – Somali National Army (SNA) troops, backed by local community defense forces, carried out a swift overnight offensive against Al-Shabaab strongholds in the Galgaduud region, military officials confirmed on Monday.
The raid targeted militant positions in the rural areas between Ali-Helle and Eid-Kus, where Al-Shabaab had recently established hideouts. According to field commanders, the assault destroyed several makeshift bases and inflicted heavy losses on the group.
“At least 10 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed, and their camps in the area were completely dismantled,” said one senior officer involved in the operation. He added that the militants had been using the hideouts to plan attacks on nearby communities and security positions.
The Somali army, in coordination with local allied forces, has intensified its military campaign in Galgaduud, aiming to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity and reclaim territory under the group’s control. Officials said the latest raid was part of a broader strategy to block planned insurgent offensives and restore security across central Somalia.
“The operations will continue until Al-Shabaab’s presence in the region is eliminated,” the military statement emphasized.
This latest success comes amid ongoing nationwide efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab, as the Somali government—backed by community militias and international partners—presses forward with its security stabilization campaign.
