MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced that a severe outbreak of the disease known locally as Diphtheria has caused the deaths of more than 50 children in the capital, Mogadishu. The revelation was made in an official press statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

According to the ministry, over 1,000 children have been confirmed infected, prompting widespread concern among families in the Banadir region. Health officials say the disease is spreading rapidly among children aged between 5 and 15, who appear to be the most vulnerable and in urgent need of medical attention.

The Ministry of Health issued a strong warning to parents, urging them to seek immediate medical care if their children show symptoms associated with the disease. Officials described the outbreak as a “serious public health threat” requiring swift community response.

Authorities also encouraged parents to ensure their children receive vaccinations, noting that a mass immunisation campaign is scheduled to begin in Mogadishu in the coming days as part of broader efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

The government has not yet specified the exact cause or medical classification of Diphtheria, but health teams are said to be working intensively to manage cases and mitigate further fatalities.
