MOGADISHU, (HAN) — The Somali Immigration and Citizenship (SICA) on Sunday convened a high-level meeting with the Somali Police Force to strengthen cooperation in securing the country’s borders. The session was held at the SICA headquarters in Mogadishu and focused on implementing the Integrated Border Management Strategy, a comprehensive approach aimed at coordinating efforts among national security institutions.

The strategy seeks to enhance border monitoring, prevent illegal migration, and combat cross-border crimes including smuggling, human trafficking, and terrorism. Officials stressed that effective border management is crucial not only for national security but also for fostering stability and economic growth.

“The security of our borders is a shared responsibility,” said a senior SICA official. “By working closely with the police, we can detect threats earlier, respond faster, and protect our citizens more effectively.”

The meeting brought together senior officials from both agencies to review current border security challenges and develop joint action plans. Topics included the use of modern surveillance technology, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building for border personnel.

This initiative reflects the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation and safeguard the country’s sovereignty. Analysts note that Somalia’s porous borders have long been exploited by criminal networks and extremist groups, making such coordinated strategies vital for national stability.

Officials also highlighted that collaboration between SICA and the police will be complemented by regional and international partnerships to ensure a holistic approach to border security.
