CAIRO, (HAN) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has departed for Doha, Qatar, to take part in the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, a major diplomatic gathering bringing together leaders from across the Arab and Islamic worlds.

The summit is set to address urgent regional challenges, including security threats, political instability, economic cooperation, and humanitarian crises. A central issue on the agenda is the recent Israeli attack on Qatar, which has heightened regional tensions and prompted calls for a coordinated diplomatic response.

Participating leaders are expected to deliberate on strategies to promote peace, strengthen regional stability, and enhance collaboration among Arab and Islamic nations.

Somalia’s involvement highlights its growing commitment to regional diplomacy. President Mohamud is expected to hold bilateral talks with several influential leaders on economic partnerships, trade opportunities, and security cooperation. Analysts say his attendance reflects Somalia’s ambition to expand international partnerships and reinforce its role in regional affairs.

Somalia and Qatar maintain strong relations, with Doha contributing significantly to development projects in Somalia, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Observers note that the summit offers Mogadishu an opportunity to deepen these ties and attract further investment to support domestic development.

By joining the summit, President Mohamud signals Somalia’s broader foreign policy priorities: strengthening diplomatic ties in the Arab and Islamic world, contributing to regional security dialogue, and positioning Somalia as a proactive partner in international cooperation.
