Mogadishu – (Horn Africa News) – The Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hon. Daud Aweys Jama, today officially opened the National Consultation Meeting on the Policy for Managing the Risks of Social Media Misuse in Mogadishu.

The two-day forum brings together key stakeholders, including Directors General of Information Ministries from the Federal Member States, SSC-Khaatumo, and the Banadir Regional Administration, heads of federal media offices, representatives of independent media outlets, members of the Independent Media Council, and prominent social media influencers.

In his opening remarks, the Minister emphasized the urgent need to develop a unified national policy to address the dangers posed by the misuse of social media platforms.

He urged participants to use the opportunity to craft a policy framework that ensures social media serves as a tool for positive engagement while countering harmful content such as extremism, disinformation, and manipulation.

Abdishakur Ali Ahmed, Director of Media Strategy at the Ministry, briefed attendees on the objectives of the consultation and its agenda, highlighting the importance of collective action in managing these challenges.

Abdullahi Hayir Du’ale, Director General of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, welcomed participants and provided an overview of the meeting’s goals. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts in formulating an effective policy that can mitigate the risks associated with improper use of social media.

The consultation is part of ongoing government efforts to promote responsible digital communication and safeguard national cohesion in the face of growing online threats.
