MOGADISHU — A Somali lawmaker has delivered a blistering critique of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of violating the constitution, eroding national unity, and resorting to authoritarian practices that threaten Somalia’s fragile democratic progress.
In a forceful statement issued Monday, MP Yusuf Hussein Gama’diid charged that the president’s conduct represents a “betrayal of the social contract,” warning that persistent disregard for constitutional order could drag the nation back into political instability and insecurity.
“The dismantling of constitutional safeguards, the plundering of public resources, and the use of force against poor and vulnerable citizens are actions that far exceed the bounds of legitimate leadership,” Gama’diid declared. “Such moves dangerously corrode public trust and imperil the very foundation of the Somali state.”
The MP accused President Hassan Sheikh of governing unilaterally, saying this risks reversing fragile gains achieved in peacebuilding and institutional development.
“Every head of state is entrusted with upholding the constitution, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and ensuring that services are delivered with fairness and transparency,” he said. “When that responsibility is abandoned, the dreams of the Somali people and the hope of a functioning state begin to fade.”
Gama’diid urged citizens to remain vigilant and resist any efforts to weaken the rule of law or undermine public unity and national resources, calling for collective action to defend Somalia’s democratic aspirations.
“A strong people build a strong nation,” he concluded.
The lawmaker’s remarks come amid mounting political tensions in Mogadishu, where opposition figures increasingly accuse the president of consolidating power and sidelining broad-based consultation in critical national decisions.
