Mogadishu (Horn Africa News) — A Somali federal lawmaker has cautioned the federal government against interfering in the formation of the SCC Khatumo administration, urging respect for the will of the local people.

Speaking to local media on Sunday, Abdirisak Hassan Dhokir, a member of the Federal Parliament, emphasized that the residents of SCC Khatumo have the right to establish an administration that reflects their interests.

“The federal government must respect the wishes of the people of SCC Khatumo and allow them to form their own administration that truly represents their aspirations,” said Dhokir.

His remarks come as preparations near completion for the official launch of SCC Khatumo’s administration. The federal government formally recognized SCC Khatumo as a federal member state several months ago — a key development in Somalia’s ongoing federalization process.

While many view the creation of SCC Khatumo as a step forward for Somalia’s federal system, Dhokir’s comments highlight growing concerns about possible overreach from Mogadishu that could undermine local trust and unity.

Regional sources report that dialogue continues between SCC Khatumo stakeholders and federal authorities, focusing on building an inclusive governance framework that ensures peace and stability.

Observers note that the success of SCC Khatumo is seen as critical to advancing Somalia’s broader efforts at reconciliation, federalization, and nation-building. However, critics warn that any undue interference by the federal government risks destabilizing the region, possibly serving short-term political interests in Mogadishu at the expense of long-term national cohesion.

Many SCC Khatumo residents see the formation of their administration as a long-awaited opportunity to break free from the challenges they say were imposed by both Somaliland and Puntland administrations over the years.

The coming weeks are expected to be decisive as SCC Khatumo leaders work to formalize their administration and secure wider support.
