MOGADISHU – A crucial meeting is set to take place today between ambassadors from the international community and members of the Somali Salvation Council, led by former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, according to reliable sources.

The discussions will focus on Somalia’s deepening political crisis and the ongoing standoff between the Somali presidency and opposition candidates pushing for political reforms.

The opposition is expected to inform the international envoys that the Somali presidency has yet to show willingness to resolve key disputes, including constitutional reforms and the electoral process. The Salvation Council has openly rejected attempts by the presidency to unilaterally decide on election-related matters, insisting instead on a broad-based political agreement to guarantee peaceful and credible elections.

Today’s talks are anticipated to either pave the way for political rapprochement that could accelerate the electoral process or further widen divisions, potentially undermining international confidence in the Somali presidency and the current political framework.

Following the opposition’s meeting, international representatives are also scheduled to hold separate talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
