MOGADISHU — Somali opposition figures on Thursday urged residents of the capital, Mogadishu, to make what they described as a critical civic choice by participating peacefully in the ongoing Banadir Regional Council elections and expressing their political will freely.
In a message directed to the public, opposition leaders called on eligible voters in Mogadishu to take advantage of what they termed a “golden opportunity” to demonstrate their democratic aspirations through the ballot box, emphasizing the importance of casting votes in a free, fair and transparent manner.
“We urge the people of Mogadishu to responsibly seize this opportunity and express their will through a free and legitimate vote,” the statement said, underscoring the need for calm, lawful participation and respect for civic processes.
The appeal comes amid heightened political tension, with opposition groups raising concerns over the credibility and inclusiveness of the Banadir election process. Despite those reservations, the leaders said public engagement remains essential to safeguarding citizens’ political rights and reinforcing democratic principles.
They also called on electoral authorities and security institutions to ensure a safe environment for voters, free from intimidation, coercion or interference, and to respect the constitutional rights of residents of the capital.
Mogadishu holds a unique political status as Somalia’s capital and largest city, and opposition leaders said the manner in which its local governance is determined carries national significance. They warned that any restrictions on voter choice or participation could further erode public trust and deepen political divisions.
The federal government has yet to respond publicly to the latest appeal.
